Community Library Volunteer

Do you have a few hours a week to spare to volunteer? Blackburn with Darwen Library and Information Service provides a wide range of books, information and other resources to support learning and leisure for all ages. We are seeking volunteers in our Community Libraries (Cherry Tree Library or Mill Hill Library) to assist in carrying out the routines necessary to maintain an effective service and pleasant environment for members of the public. Please note that volunteers for Roman Road Library should apply to BwD Healthy Living instead. Timetables can be agreed at interview.

Tasks Part 1

To welcome customers to the building, support their use of library services & encourage them to become regular users. Helping new customers to join the library using the Blackburn with Darwen website. Assisting customers to use self-service kiosks. Helping with basic enquiries using the online public access catalogue (OPAC) & assisting customers to reserve & renew items online. To help find stock for visitors & library staff. Supporting the use of public access PCs & helping customers to access a variety of websites. Providing general information about & promoting library services (eg reading schemes, events, activites & online resources). Maintaining displays & ensuring that the library is a bright & attractive environment. General tidying, shelving & sorting of stock. Repairing & maintaining library books.

Tasks Part 2

Topping up the photocopier, kiosk & printers with paper. Contribute towards organising volunteer rotas, opening/closing the building, setting the alarm & reporting any faults. Following agreed procedures to report faults/repairs/health & safety issues. Communicating with central library staff. Answering the telephone, checking emails & following agreed procedures for communicating with other volunteers. Supporting and preparing for library activities & events. Supporting record keeping, eg periodic visitor & enquiry counts. Collecting newspapers & forwarding invoices to Blackburn Library. Checking daily postal deliveries. Attend relevant training & meetings. Log volunteer hours via an online computer system.

Required Qualities

Excellent communication & interpersonal skills Organisational skills Ability to carry out tasks with minimum supervision Ability to contribute effectively as part of a team Experience of dealing directly with the public Excellent understanding of the principles & delivery of customer care Adaptable to changes Ability to follow all guidelines & risk assessments. Volunteers should be age 17 or over to apply for this opporunity.
